Going on Wednesday for a week over (our) Easter. First direct flights we found. Looking forward to some sunshine after a long cold British winter. Not expecting hot, maybe reaching low twenties in the middle of a good day. DaVinci's open at weekends and a couple of bars open each evening but a lot of the village will be closed until the end of April, most of the owners at their homes in Malona, Masari and Rhodes Town. Maybe a few weekend visitors if the weather's good.
Spring flowers and empty beaches, cool enough to walk for miles in comfort but precious few places to buy even a coffee or a coke on and around beaches that will be packed in a few weeks time. Some would swim but too cold for me. The Haraki view is just the same but the sea is saying "stay out" rather than "come in".
Eating in wherever is open in Haraki plus towns further afield . . interesting finding places in the closed season and some very good food to be had.
Rhodes (new) Town still vibrant, this place doesn't need the tourists to keep it alive.
Four more weeks and all will be completely different as the village opens for the season and once again becomes the Haraki that us summer visitors are used to. Between now and then the beach will be cleaned after the ravages of the winter storms. A man with a digger will smooth out all the lumps and bumps bringing it back to the form we're used to. The tavernas will be rebuilt on Agathi (they're removed every autumn) the winter covers removed from the palm trees outside the Hotel, fresh paint applied here and there, tables, chairs, brollies and sunbeds brought out into the fresh air once more. It'll be like we were never away.
Out of season Haraki can be lovely.
